Amy Taylor Wilson Fund for Mid-State Literacy Council
Our dream is that no one lacks literacy, so everyone can access a life of safety, realized goals, and community participation. In 1971, a group of community members realized that thousands of adults and young adults in the county could not read and write. Illiteracy caused suffering, the pain of social exclusion and scarce employment opportunities. Mid-State Literacy Council was established to provide reading, writing, math, and English instruction. Basic computer instruction, health, and financial literacy was later added. Led by a professional staff, 200 trained volunteers teach essential skills, leading learners to the opportunities of employment, citizenship, and healthcare. Parents learn to read to their children sharing their new literacy skills with the next generation. Literacy is the lifelong gift.
