Virginia Higgins Suhey Scholarship Fund
Virginia “Ginger” Higgins Suhey was born in 1927 in Clarksburg, WV. Her father, Bob Higgins, was the Penn State football coach for 19 years and coached Steven Suhey, who Ginger married in 1949 after graduating from State High and Penn State. She taught physical education at Juniata College and was an active member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, Penn State Nittany Lion Club, and St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. After Steven’s passing, she took over his business, LG Balfour Co., in which she and her son, Larry, helped high school students celebrate their achievements with commemorative items, such as class rings and yearbooks. Ginger and Steven had seven children—Stephen, Kathy, Betsy, Larry, Nancy, Paul, and Matthew—who opened this fund as a way to give back to Ginger’s beloved community. This fund provides scholarships to Centre County high school seniors pursuing post-secondary education. Special considerations will be given to those demonstrating financial need or familial hardships.
