Adam Harwell Sunbeam Endowment Fund
Adam Harwell was a student at State College Area High School when he passed away in May of 2012. Adam had many, many friends in the community and at his church, St. Paul's United Methodist Church, who saw beyond his physical and intellectual challenges. They knew him as a loving, affectionate young man for whom there were no strangers. He generously provided those around him with lots of laughter, hugs, and pats on the nose. Adam enjoyed music of all kinds, road trips, camping with his family and friends, going to the beach, Penn State and Steelers football, and NASCAR races. He especially liked balloons, picnics, outdoor walks, and attending baseball games. This fund supports the Special Education program at State College Area High School by assisting with professional development costs for the teachers in the LifeLink program. The origins of the LifeLink program lie in the efforts of "The Wild Dream Team," a group of high school students with mental challenges who developed a strategy to help with the transition to adult life and independence. This strategy included self-evaluation, goal setting, risk taking, planning, and changing the perceptions of others who often place limits on their independence and self-determination.
